What do you normally do during the summer? Sleep? Play games? Watch TV? Hang out with friends? What about expanding your knowledge? Participating in programs? Volunteering?
Summer is a time when you can easily give in to sloth, when you can become lazy and unproductive. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t have fun. Of course, you should! You need to balance fun and work/learning. However, you need to incorporate that work/learning aspect to your summers as well.

Here are some alternative activities** that can contribute to a productive, fun and balanced summer:*
- Exercise! Go outside and enjoy the sun! Take a stroll, go to the gym (or make your house your workout place), run. Keep your body active and healthy.
- Get a job! Gain some work experience and make some money at the same time!
- Volunteer! Just because the school year is over doesn't mean volunteer service must stop! It’s always great to give back to the community, and to earn some hours for helping. If your high school has a requirement of volunteer hours, and you’re behind, the summer is the time to catch up. (This also applies to some scholarship programs.)
- Study! Do not fall behind. Even during the summer, your brain should be getting as much exercise as your body.
- Get involved in a summer enrichment program! It can be a great learning experience that strengthens your brain muscles and your interpersonal skills.
- Writing Essays! First drafts are always rough, ideas are sometimes hard to come by, time during the year may be limited. Take advantage of the summer to get your college essays started, so you’re not scrambling last minute to finish. Starting early also gives you more to time to revise and perfect your essays
- Search for scholarships! Do not wait till Senior year to start looking! Maybe major scholarships begin in August, so preparing for what to apply in the summer is a major advantage.
